Enable the team spokesperson

When if comes to small group discussions, I’m often quite pleased when someone else offers to present the highlights of our group’s discussion. And yet,  I’m not always comfortable with their summary. Because I’m not looking at their notes, I can’t determine if: 1) they’ve heard everything or 2) they’ve summarized and prioritized the conversation as we all intended.

To minimize frustration and maximize the impact and effectiveness of small group discussions, I find it’s helpful to equip each group with a large sheet of paper, a flip chart or a tabletop whiteboard, on which the group can both brainstorm and sort through their ideas. This way, everybody can feel their input matters.
